TISSUE CULTURE

Maintaining Strong Yield
Kulim has been one of the leaders in the Malaysian palm oil industry in terms of yield performance for the last several years. Moving forward, the Group is constantly seeking for new strategies and innovations that will further enhance this advantage, thus ensuring sustainable high profitability from its plantation operations.

To this end, a fresh approach which would complement and augment the effectiveness of its excellent existing plant breeding programme is needed. As such, in December 2004 Kulim tissue culture project was launched. The programme is conducted through its subsidiary, Kulim TopPlant Sdn Bhd, a joint venture with Top Plant Laboratories Sdn Bhd.

Superior Yielding Clonal Palms Under this initiative, the tissue culture technology will be used to produce superior yielding oil palm clonal materials. However, the gestation period is relatively long, i.e. from initiation to plants being ready for field planting.

Positively, initial production of clonal seedlings has been encouraging, notwithstanding the early phase that the project is in.

The Group is confident that Kulim TopPlant and its tissue culture programme will provide a new dimension to its plantation operations and contribute towards the Group's ultimate objective of sustainable value deliverance to all stakeholders.
