Human Rights and Labour Practices

We treat all our employees fairly, guided by Human Resources policies that reflect Malaysia’s labour laws as well as the International Labour Organisation (ILO)’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.
Our estate and mill workers typically live in two or three-bedroom houses that meet the Employees’ Minimum Standards of Housing, Accommodations and Amenities Act 1990.
Weekly inspections are carried out to ensure all living quarters, as well as nurseries and community halls, are in good condition.
During peak harvest season, our mill workers tend to work longer hours to ensure the fruit is processed before their quality deteriorates.
We ensure that they do not exceed the overtime limit as set by the Department of Labour guideline.
In line with local labour laws and Principle 6.4 in RSPO P&C 2018, KULIM published our Employment of Children and Young Person Policy in 2008 stating clearly that we will not knowingly engage in or support child labour.
A formal policy on the protection of children is also included in our service contracts and supplier agreements.

Workers Welfare

KULIM’s commitment to providing focused and practical support to local communities in need while instilling an ethos of volunteerism among KULIM employees across its operations. We actively encourage management and staff to participate in welfare, work, and charity projects. Our initiatives focus on five key pillars: corporate sponsorship, education, social, environment and sports.


KULIM allocated RM18.43 million and RM17.26 million, respectively, for corporate responsibility initiatives in 2020 and 2021. These were directed to institutions and outreach programmes linked to the five previously mentioned pillars.
We strive to ensure that our supply chain lives up to the Group’s No Deforestation, No New Development on Peat, and No Exploitation of People and Local Communities (NDPE) Policy
We strive to create an inclusive work environment.
We have a strict policy of non-discrimination based on gender, ethnic or religious minority groups, and foreign workers.
Training and awareness-raising are carried out to promote fair and equal treatment for everyone.

Safety and Health

Kulim are committed to securing the safety and health of all our employees at work and strives to maintain a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers and the public.

Through implementing Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Policy and ensuring the safety of all our workers in our estates and mills and the well-being of our workforce, they are empowered to drive performance excellence.

We value our workplace safety and health as being of paramount importance for all our employees and our respective Managers/Heads of Departments of each estate and mill have a dedicated OSH committee and an OSH officer responsible for organising safety training programmes and conducting quarterly OSH meetings.

The officer monitors all of the compliance on Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 and also investigates any accidents that occur and reports back to the chairperson.
We have set KPIs or targets to ensure we cultivate a safety culture amongst our employees. We continuously train and brief our employees on aspects of safety and health and strict supervision, and continuous improvement of processes are salient in our approach towards managing high Occupational Safety and Health Standards.

We remain vigilant in monitoring our safety performance by keeping track of our lost time accident rates (LTAR), severity rates, and fatalities throughout our operations. We aim to maintain an LTAR of below ten each year and a severity rate of below 3.5 each year.

Workers Benefits

All employees, including foreign workers, have access to free health clinics and health benefit plans. Whenever workers require hospital medical attention, the company reimburses all applicable expenses. Other measures to protect our workers from health risks are regular fogging to guard against dengue fever and the provision of adequate potable water treatment facilities. The provision of clinics and healthcare facilities for our workers and local communities at our plantations.

Water Management

Kulim recognises the importance of ensuring efficient water management and safeguarding its quality. This is achieved by reducing the impact of our operations. We are cognisant that FFB harvesting and CPO production require a heavy reliance on water; therefore, we seek to implement best water management practices.
Soil erosion is a common cause of water pollution. We plant fast-growing leguminous cover crops in erosion-prone areas. We monitor the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) of surrounding water bodies to ensure we do not pollute water in the vicinity of our operations.
In 2021, our consumption intensity increased by a marginal 1.8% yet remained well below our target of 1.2m3/MT FFB. To reduce our consumption, we recycle water from steriliser condensates in our mills. We have also installed water catchment areas to harvest rainwater.

Waterways are also contaminated by applying chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers (which, further contribute significantly to the carbon footprint of plantations). To reduce chemical usage, hence our chemical pollution as well as carbon emissions, we have adopted an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach leveraging animals to control pests such as weeds and rodents.

Livestock have been introduced into our plantations since 2008 as a natural weeding method while also improving soil fertility, recycling nutrients and reducing chemical usage

Most of the solid waste we produce is bio-based and disposed of using environmentally-friendly methods. Our mills and estates also generate scheduled waste, stored in designated sheds for up to 180 days or until the maximum volume of 20 MT is met. Subsequently, licensed contractors approved by the DOE will dispose of the waste in accordance with Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) regulations
