Our Certifications

Our commitment to sustainable operations has always been a part of Kulim's culture. We have been members of the RSPO since 2004, and in 2009 were one of the earliest Malaysian palm oil companies to attain RSPO certification. The Group’s RSPO-certified practices help influence our access to global markets and assure customers and consumers that we follow responsible and sustainable practices. Kulim is committed to the RSPO certification process and has developed a time-bound plan to achieve certification against the RSPO Principles & Criteria (P&C).


In Malaysia, our five mills and accompanying estates are 100% RSPO-certified and undergo re-certification every five years. Three of our mills hold Identity Preserved status. This means palm oil from these mills can be traced to a single identifiable certified source and kept separate from conventional oil throughout the supply chain. The two other mills hold mass balance status, meaning Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO) is mixed and sold with conventionally produced Crude Palm Oil (CPO).

In Indonesia, two estates are still in the process of being certified. The Time-Bound Plan are shown below:

KULIM had completed the acquisition in 2016. The rehabilitation was done for 3 years and completed in 2019. RSPO certification Time Bound Plan (TBP) was initially scheduled for completion in 2023 – application to revise the TBP from 2023 to 2025 been submitted for approval by RSPO on March 27, 2022.

MSPO

We are 100% certified by the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) scheme, a nationally mandated programme that came into effect on 1 January 2020 for all palm oil mills and oil palm estates larger than 40.46 hectares. Our MSPO policy was published in 2018 and outlines our commitments. We completed all our MSPO audits in 2018 and achieved our objective for all mills to be MSPO certified by subsequently receiving certification for all our mills and estates in 2019.

In 2019, all mills also underwent MSPO Sustainable Supply Chain Certification (SCCS) audits, and we met our 2020 target of receiving MSPO SCCS certification for all mills.

The MSPO Certification Scheme is the national certification scheme mandatory for oil palm plantations, independent and organised smallholdings, and palm oil processing facilities in Malaysia. While the MSPO SCCS covers management requirements and traceability of the production throughout the supply chain from the raw materials to processing and manufacturing of palm oil and palm oil-based products. Each group of players must perform their respective roles and undertake the responsibility to enable traceability of all activities throughout the palm oil supply chain.

HALAL

As global concerns about food safety continue to grow, Kulim obtained the certification on HALAL in May 2015 for all Mills. HALAL is a chain-of-custody system that provides assurance of appropriate and safe handling of food production in accordance with Islamic principles.

The HALAL certification is based on the Malaysian Standard on HALAL Food – Production, Preparation, Handling and Storage (MS 1500:2009), Manual Procedure for Malaysia HALAL Certification and Sertu Guideline.

ISCC

All five of our mills are certified against International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), a globally recognised standard for sustainable biomass and bio-energy production that applies to companies selling products to European markets.

ISCC is a globally leading certification in the biomass and bioenergy industries, focusing on reducing GHG emissions, sustainable use of land, protection of natural biospheres, and social sustainability.

ISO/IEC 17025:2017 LABORATORY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM STANDARDS

Our Ulu Tiram central laboratory in Kota Tinggi is ISO/IEC 17025:2017-certified. The certification specifies the general requirements for the competence to conduct tests or calibrations, including sampling.

ISO 37001:2016 ANTI-BRIBERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (ABMS)

Kulim has been successfully certified with MS ISO 37001:2016 Anti-Bribery Management System (ABMS), ISO ABMS is one of the tools for fighting corruption and as a defence in meeting the requirement of “adequate procedures”. The scope of the certification covers Oil Palm Plantation (estates and mills), Pineapple Operation, Cattle Operation and Corporate Services in Malaysia.
